Computing

'Computing lessons are fun because we solve problems in different ways.'
'Computing helps me be creative and logical at the same time. It helps me understand how technology works, not just how to use it.'
'Computing has helped me become more confident and determined because even when my code doesn’t work at first, I keep trying until I solve the problem.  I can also explain how algorithms and coding work.'
Pupil Voice

Intent

At St Alban & St Stephen Catholic Primary School, our Computing curriculum inspires pupils to embrace and use technology in a safe, responsible and creative way, equipping them with the essential skill of computational thinking to thrive in a digital world. We ensure technology is accessible to all, enabling every child to become a confident, creative and independent user of technology. Through high-quality lessons delivered using the KAPOW Computing programme, pupils develop strong digital literacy, learning not only to use technology but to create with it. Our curriculum nurtures resilience, problem-solving, critical thinking and creativity, while making meaningful links with Maths, Science and Design and Technology. In doing so, we prepare our children to be responsible digital citizens, active members of both our school community and the wider global world.

Implementation

Our Computing curriculum builds progressively by revisiting prior learning and making clear connections to new concepts. Teachers explicitly model key vocabulary, knowledge and skills, using regular quizzes to support retrieval and ensure pupils remember more over time. Computing is taught both across the curriculum and through discrete lessons where appropriate to provide suitable challenge and depth. Assessment is ongoing to inform teaching, with end-of-unit assessments used to check understanding and progress. Our Computing curriculum is fully aligned with the National Curriculum and is designed to ensure all pupils develop the knowledge, skills, and understanding outlined within it.

Impact

The impact of our Computing curriculum is evident through pupil voice and the quality of work produced across all year groups. Pupils demonstrate growing confidence, competence and understanding in their use of technology, and digital work is reviewed termly to ensure strong progression. By the time they leave St Alban & St Stephen, pupils have the knowledge and skills to stay safe and thrive in a technology-rich world, applying their learning confidently in school and beyond.
