Wellbeing and Mental Health
The pastoral care offered by the school is exceptional.
Catholic Schools Inspectorate

At St Alban & St Stephen, the wellbeing and mental health of every child is central to our mission and rooted in our Gospel values. We strive to create a strong sense of belonging, recognising that each child is a unique and valued child of God. Feeling part of our school family supports children’s emotional wellbeing and helps them to grow in confidence and self-belief.
Through PSHE lessons and regular classroom circle times, children learn about trusted adults they can talk to. Each classroom has a worry box or emotional regulation check-in so that children can share concerns safely. Events such as Mental Health and Wellbeing Week further encourage pupils to reflect on healthy ways to express and manage their emotions.
Children find regular opportunities for stillness and reflection through Christian meditation and collective worship, allowing time to pause, pray and find calm in the busy school day. We also place a high priority on sport and music, recognising the powerful role physical activity, teamwork and creative expression play in promoting positive mental wellbeing.
In Key Stage 2, pupils can take part in a range of lunchtime wellbeing clubs, including Drawing Club, Knit and Natter, and Board Games Club. These calm, supportive spaces promote relaxation and positive social interaction.
Whenever children need a little extra support, our dedicated Pastoral Mentor provides regular check-ins and tailored guidance to help them feel safe and understood. We offer targeted interventions such as Lego Therapy, Draw and Talk and Big Life Journal groups to support emotional development and resilience, helping children to overcome obstacles. Where appropriate, we also work in partnership with specialist Vista counsellors to ensure children and families can access additional professional support.
Parents and carers can contact our Pastoral Mentor, Mrs Rees, via admin@ssas.herts.sch.uk. Class teachers are always available to discuss any concerns parents may have around their child.
